Ultrasonic spot welding joins thermoplastic parts at individual points rather than along a continuous seam. A small horn tip delivers vibration to a spot, melting the plastic under it and creating a localized bond. It is useful where a full seam is not needed or where only part of an assembly must be fixed.
Typical Applications
- Attaching nonwoven or fabric to plastic: filters, covers and trims where fabric must be fixed to a plastic frame.
- Tacking plastic sheets and films: holding layers together before further assembly.
- Automotive interior parts: fixing trim and fabric-covered components. See our automotive solutions.
- Electronics and consumer housings: fixing small plastic components inside an assembly. See electronics solutions.
- Repair and rework: reattaching a loose plastic part with a handheld unit. See our hand guns.
Advantages of Spot Welding
- Very short cycle times for each spot.
- No adhesive, screws or consumables.
- Flexible: spot positions and spacing can be changed by tooling.
- Can often be handheld or automated.
Points to Consider
- Parts must be thermoplastic and compatible with each other.
- Spot strength depends on the number, size and position of spots.
- Tip shape and amplitude need to suit the material.
